Driver charged with Dangerous Driving after incident on Highway 102

Release:
May 31, 2011, Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) . . . Royal Canadian Mounted Police have charged a man with Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Flight from Police after an incident on May 28, 2011, on Highway 102, near Fall River, Nova Scotia.
On May 28, 2011, at approximately 3:50 p.m. an RCMP officer was responding to a call and traveling on Highway 102 with full emergency equipment on.  The officer observed a gray vehicle traveling in the passing lane gaining distance on the police car.  The police officer was responding to an emergency and therefore exceeded the posted limit.  The car passed the police vehicle, smiled and saluted the officer, and then proceeded to accelerate away from the police car.  The RCMP officer changed lanes and attempted to stop the vehicle.  The driver of the other vehicle refused to stop.  When the speeds increased beyond 150 km/hr, the police officer was instructed to abandon the attempts to stop the vehicle.  The suspect continued on Highway 102 at a high rate of speed.
Further investigation traced the vehicle to a car rental agency and the driver was identified.   On May 30, 2011, the suspect was arrested in Pictou County after the man failed to stop for police in that jurisdiction.
The 33-year-old from Toronto, Ontario will be appearing in Dartmouth Provincial Court on May 31, 2011. He is charged with the Criminal Code charges of Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Flight from Police.  He also faces several charges under the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act.
