Driver Charged With Stunting, COVID-19 Offenses

Release:

On Saturday at approximately 3:00 p.m., a member of the RCMP’s South East Traffic Services observed a white Volkswagen Golf travelling at a high rate of speed on Hwy. 101 in Halifax County. The police officer used RADAR to check the speed, which was 140 km/hr in a posted 90 km/hr zone. The RCMP have charged the 18-year-old male driver with Stunting under the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act and Driving Without Insurance. The vehicle was seized and impounded. The fine for stunting in Nova Scotia is $2,422.50.

Also in the vehicle was a 19-year-old male passenger, evidence gathered indicated both the driver and passenger to be in violation of Failing to Maintain a Social Distance of two metres or six feet under the Health Protection Act in relation to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Both were charged and each are now facing a further $1,000 fine.

Nova Scotians are very good at looking out for one another in times of need. We are asking people to help protect their communities by reporting crime and suspicious behaviour to police, and by adhering to the steps outlined by government to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Further the RCMP want to remind the public that speed is one of the major causes of serious injury and fatal collisions on our roads. Road Safety is a priority for the RCMP, and drivers are reminded to make it their priority as well. If you see someone driving unsafely on our roads, report it by calling the RCMP at 1-800-803-RCMP (7267) or 911.
