RCMP release:
RCMP Northeast Traffic Services – Cape Breton is investigating a hit and run that occurred on February 24, on Hwy. 125 near Sydney River.
On February 24 at approximately 6:30 p.m., RCMP Northeast Traffic Services, Cape Breton Regional Police, fire services, and EHS responded to a report of a collision on Hwy. 125 at exit 6w for Sydney River. Investigators learned that a red Mazda CX-5 was travelling westbound and had moved to the exit lane. Another vehicle, also travelling westbound, merged into the exit lane and the two vehicles collided. The Mazda then hit a snowbank and went over the guardrails and down a hill.
The driver and only occupant of the Mazda CX-5 did not report injuries.
The driver of the other vehicle, possible a silver or grey sedan, did not stop and is believed to have exited Hwy. 125 into Sydney River at this point.
The highway was not shut down, though officers on scene appreciated that drivers slowed down and moved over while first responders were on or around the roadway. Cape Breton Regional Police Service provided important support while police worked at the scene of the collision.
The investigation is ongoing. Investigators are asking anyone who may have seen the collision or who has dashcam footage and has not yet spoken with police to contact RCMP Northeast Traffic Services – Cape Breton.
