Drug-impaired driver arrested with child in the car

At 4:27 p.m. on November 18, Kings District RCMP responded to a call of a dangerous driver on Brooklyn St. in Somerset. The caller told police a white van nearly ran three other vehicles off the road, then hit a trailer that was attached to the back of a truck and went off the road on the opposite side. The caller also told police there was a small child in the vehicle with the driver and the caller thought the driver was impaired. The driver was attempting to leave the area on foot with the child.

Kingston RCMP arrived on scene and observed signs of drug impairment from the driver who had suffered minor injuries. The child was assessed by EHS and taken to hospital for further examination of what are believed to be minor injuries. The driver was arrested and he resisted the police officer’s efforts to take him into custody, as well as damaged the police car, and threatened police. Drugs and drug paraphernalia were found on his person when he was searched. He was taken to Kings District RCMP Detachment where a Drug Recognition test was completed. He was held in custody overnight and is being taken to Kentville Provincial Court today. The 37-year-old man from Kentville is facing charges of Impaired Operation of a Conveyance by a Drug, Obstruction (Resisting Arrest), Assaulting a Police Officer, Uttering Threats, and Mischief Under $5000.

The RCMP would like to thank those drivers who called to report this vehicle for erratic driving. Police continue to encourage drivers to call them if they see anyone who is driving unsafely. Nova Scotia RCMP can be reached from anywhere in the province by calling 1-800-803-RCMP (7267). If it’s an emergency, call 911.

The investigation is ongoing.
