Easter Weekend 2026: What’s Open and Closed in Halifax

With the Easter long weekend arriving (April 3–6), here is the essential guide for residents on municipal services, retail closures, and urgent infrastructure updates.

Waste Collection & Facilities

  • No Collection: There is no curbside pickup on Good Friday (April 3). Residents who usually have Friday collection will have their service moved to Saturday, April 4.
  • Facilities: The Otter Lake Waste Facility and Materials Recovery Facility are closed Friday, but open Saturday. The Bayers Lake Household Special Waste Depot is closed Saturday, April 4.

Halifax Transit Schedule

  • Good Friday (April 3): All buses and the Alderney/Woodside ferries will operate on holiday schedules.
  • Easter Sunday (April 5): Buses and the Alderney ferry will operate on holiday schedules. No service for the Woodside ferry.
  • Easter Monday (April 6): Regular bus service. The Alderney ferry will run on a 30-minute schedule due to ongoing repairs to the Vincent Coleman ferry.
  • Parking: On-street paid parking is free on Friday, April 3 and Monday, April 6.

Retail & Grocery Hours

In Nova Scotia, Good Friday and Easter Sunday are designated retail closing days.

  • Grocery Stores: Sobeys, Atlantic Superstore, and Costco are CLOSED Friday and Sunday. They are open regular hours Saturday and Monday.
  • NSLC: All NSLC stores are CLOSED Friday and Sunday.

  • Pharmacies: Most will remain open, but many will operate with reduced holiday hours.

Municipal Services

  • 311 Contact Centre: Closed for general inquiries on Friday and Sunday (urgent calls still accepted).
  • Libraries: All Halifax Public Libraries branches are CLOSED Friday, Sunday, and Monday.
  • Recreation: Most municipal pools and gyms are closed Friday, Sunday, and Monday. Please check your local facility for specific Saturday hours.
