Monday, Feb. 29, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents that beginning Monday, Mar. 7, 2016, the eastern section of Jamieson Street in Dartmouth will be renamed Ropewalk Lane.
The current configuration of Jamieson Street creates a duplicate street name situation where the road forks and both sections are named Jamieson Street. Furthermore, as the eastern portion of Jamieson Street is at a right angle to the continuous portion of Jamieson Street, the current situation is a public safety concern and not in keeping with the municipal civic addressing policies.
Municipal civic addressing policies require that a continuous street shall have one name throughout its length and that no street name shall be continued through a right angle turn. The same policies also require that when considering renaming a public street or private road, Civic Addressing should choose a solution that addresses public safety concerns.
The name “Ropewalk Lane” was chosen to bring forth an aspect of the local history of Dartmouth. The Dartmouth Rope Works Co, a prominent rope factory, was located a short distance from the street being renamed. The street being renamed was used to transport the factory’s rope products. A “ropework” was a function within that factory.
The matter was discussed with the municipality’s Civic Addressing Public Safety Committee, which includes representatives from Halifax Regional Fire Services, Halifax Regional Police, RCMP, EHS and the Nova Scotia 911 Service. As a result, staff recommended renaming the eastern section of Jamieson Street and Regional Council approved the recommendation at its meeting on Nov. 24, 2015.
