El Paso Strong: Vigil and Rally Against White Supremacy
When: Sun. Sept 8 @ 5pm
Where: Halifax Grand Parade
Community members in Halifax will gather for a vigil and rally to commemorate victims of the massacre in the US border town of El Paso on August 3rd, as well as to speak out against the white supremacy and xenophobia which gave rise to the attack. This solidarity event takes place the same weekend as the Day of Action Against White Supremacy in El Paso.
The El Paso shooting was one of the largest attacks against the Latinx population in recent US history. In total, 22 people were killed and another 24 were injured. Among those killed were parents, grandparents and spouses from both sides of the US-Mexico border.
Speakers will discuss Trump’s role in fostering the conditions for such a hate crime, particularly his targeting of Latin American immigrants and asylum-seekers through racist discourse and policies. This includes massive raids against undocumented workers, the separation of Central American refugee families, as well as their detainment in modern-day concentration camps.
They will also discuss a series of troubling anti-immigrant reforms that have been ushered in by Trudeau government, and the importance of standing up to divisive politics as we head into elections.
