This first full week of May marks Emergency Preparedness Week, a national initiative coordinated by Public Safety Canada. HRM Partners in Policing reminds citizens to be prepared in the event of emergencies and disasters and encourages people to take three simple steps to better prepare themselves.

• Know the risks – Knowing the risks specific to your area will help you to better prepare.

• Make a plan – Prepare your household for an emergency or disaster.

• Get an emergency kit – Create a household and car emergency kit that contain basic supplies to keep you self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in an emergency.
