Media Advisory Event unveiling new ferry

Thursday, May 8, 2014 – Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) and Metro Transit wish to advise media and residents that on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 there will be an event to unveil the new ferry “Christopher Stannix” as part of the fleet and to honour Master Corporal Christopher Stannix.

The ferry has been completed. In the days prior to the event, ferry staff will be taking the time to operate the new ferry in Halifax Harbour.

Media will have an opportunity to tour the ferry on Wednesday May 14. The official ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. in Nathan Green Square, beside the Halifax Ferry Terminal. Mayor Savage, Regional Councillors, and honoured guests: members of Master Corporal Stannix’s family, members of the Canadian Military, and representatives from A.F. Theriault, the company that build the ferry, will be in attendance. Ferry service on both the Alderney route and the Woodside route will be free for the day.

Master Corporal Stannix was a graduate of Auburn High School and attended Saint Mary’s University. In 2001 he enlisted with the Canadian Armed Forces. In April 2007, he was killed when the vehicle he was in struck a roadside bomb in Afghanistan. He was 24 years old.

The new ferry will ensure that residents will have increased service on the Woodside/Halifax route and will go into service on May 20. The updated schedule for the Woodside Ferry Route can be found here: http://www.halifax.ca/metrotransit/Schedules/documents/FerryWoodsideWebSchedule.pdf
