Favourite Friday: 18 June edition: Cupcakes, Proms and being Seventeen

L-A: Happy Friday! I don’t know about you, but I’ve been working for the weekend and I’m pretty excited that it’s here. I don’t even have plans. I just want it to be the weekend.  My favourite things this week are:

Cupcake camp!!
nataliedee.com
nataliedee.com
I’m not even entirely sure what this is, but what I do know is that I need to be a part of it. From what I’ve been told, it’s people bringing cupcakes to a central location and then eating those cupcakes. Heaven on earth? Maybe.  It’s also for raising money for a good cause…but that’s just icing on the proverbial cupcake.

Speaking of pretty coloured confections, I am totally excited about our Prom Night. We’re hitting the Public Gardens on Thursday, June 24th.  We’re taking suggestions for dress codes. And we’ll be having après-Prom drinks to discuss the Promservations (like, number of girls who overtanned, favourite dresses, etc). Stay tuned to Facebook and twitter for the details.

Next favourite thing is my new favourite blog: The Seventeen Magazine Project

Actually, the Seventeen Magazine Project has nothing to do with Janis “Debbie Downer” Ian’s song. That’s really more of a song for when you’re alone with your high school yearbook and a box of wine. The good folks on twitter gave me much better suggestions for songs about being seventeen: I saw her standing there (from @NathAt), Dancing Queen (@cgmanley), Bootylicious/Edge of Seventeen (@thefuzzymethod). Country music was suggested (@mmmackinnon – and no. I am not linking to the country music), but I wasn’t even going there.  And I thought of Anthem for a Seventeen Year old Girl, but couldn’t find a decent video. but I completely digress….

The Seventeen Magazine Project! As you are well aware, we love a good throwdown, but the longest we’ve ever gone is a week of dressing like an idiot Carrie Bradshaw.  So of course we’d love a girl who is challenging herself to live the Seventeen lifestyle (and writes about her prom). For reals.  For 30 days she is doing everything that the June/July Seventeen magazine tells its readers to do.  Wear pink lipgloss? She’s going to do it. Throw a corny party in order to passive aggressively get a boy to notice you? She’s going to do it. And then she writes smart commentary about media, teenage culture and about being a teenage girl. And she also makes awesome graphs:

Honestly, I’m not sure I was that smart when I was 18. Maybe I was and I didn’t have the internet to show off my smrts. We will never know. After reading her blog, I kind of want to be her best friend.  And if she were legally allowed to drink, I would totally want to go have drinks with her and talk smart girl things. Instead I will break out the box of wine and read her blog some more. Maybe that can be my plans for the weekend.

Ally: So, I got my hair did! I went to my girl Barrett at Vibe Salon in Bedford. Oh, do I love her. The thing about Barrett is she gets me in and out of that chair in an hour an a half. Anyone that has foils knows that this is indeed a feat. I wanted to go blonde a la my favourite girl on The Hills, Kristin Cav (are you bitches watching The Hills? You should be watching The Hills).

My neighbourhood bestie, Melissa, took the photos after indulging in a few cans of beer with my husband on the back deck.

‘scuse the shades. My eyes are puffy from staying up late doing some real-life work and cuddling a teething baby. I have no idea why I smile like that. It’s awful. You should give me credit for posting crappy photos of myself on The Internets. Oh, how I am devoted to you readers.

I also have to share with you a new segment one of my favourite blogs are introducing on their site. 365 Fashion Rehab is now having Closets & Cocktails. Are you loving it? They describe these new posts as, “ where we get to take a glimpse into the closets of some of the most fashionable people we know”. I will pray every night that L-A and I might be included in this fantastic endeavour.

Amazing. Isn’t A. adorable? Although lately, the thought of hiding in my closet with a martini shaker has been more appealing than showcasing the contents of said closet. Teething babies are scary stuff!

Crappy Video song of the Week you ask? Why yes I will, thank you:

Fine. It’s not an “actual” video, but this song as been on repeat on my ipod all week. And oui, mon friends, I do admit to dancing around my bedroom a wee bit while rocking out to this beat.

You know, I don’t know if I find this song liberating, or offensive. I mean, I give Akon and Kardi cred for referring to stretch marks on a woman’s hips as just “bungee cords bringing you back when you dip”. That’s sort of cool…right? Shit, I love this song. Loooooovin’ how you woooooork it….
