Ally: On Wednesday night we interviewed Veronica MacIsaac (designer) and Victoria Bouchard (MUA) at the Haligonia.ca studios. I’d like to say that L-A and I are improving on the video front, but we have a ways to go. Like, all the way to Alaska and back. That seems far. I overtalk and make mortifying jokes to compensate for my nervousness and L-A stares at the camera like it’s Justin Bieber about to serenade her.
We had a great time, though. Veronica and Victoria were complete dolls about our amateur interview skills, and made out like the pros they are. We’ll have the video linked up for you as soon as it is ready. In the meantime, check out the photos on our Facebook page. While you’re there, “like” us up, will you? Wednesday night also brought about an epiphany. I have come to realize that L-A and I have very different taste. I sort of knew this already, but I don’t think I realized how truly hideous she found some of my outfits (perhaps “hideous” isn’t the best word…however, a quiet reflection upon my closet today did deem some outfits hideous).
We were in the cab home when I turned to her and said, “So this dress is cute, yes?” She pretended to cough, mumbled something into her hands and stared out the window. I was silent for a moment, and then whispered, “Is it not age appropriate?” She mumbled a bit more and then I think felt sorry for me, since this was my first time out of mom clothes in awhile. To be fair, it was a $9 Walmart dress. It was not the see-thru one I spoke of during Wednesday’s post (can you imagine L-A’s horror if I had worn that? Or my horror when I snap out of this sleep deprived state?), it was the black version. Here’s a photo:
‘scuse the hair. It was pouring out. So, perhaps I should save this dress for the beach as a bathing suit cover up. Or for wearing around the cottage? Gawd, maybe I truly do lack taste. I was maybe buying into the whole tie dye trend a bit too much. HOWEVER! I paired the $9 dress with vintage jewellery, including a charm bracelet.
And the shoes are lovely. Don’t even think of telling me my shoes aren’t age appropriate.
This brings me to the next item on my agenda. Almost a year ago, I wrote about my love for Zellers. L-A disagreed with me, and talked about clothes as investments, and you don’t invest in Zellers. I do completely agree on the “clothes as investments” argument. I also think there is a place for Zellers and Walmart items in your closet. The proof? Well, Neighbourhood Bestie Melissa popped over the other night after a dinner out with her girls. She was wearing the cutest purple dress paired with a silver pendant. Can you guess from where?
My photo skills stink, but the dress was truly adorable in person. Colour was beautiful, and it hung so perfectly on her.
Detail on the back? Love it? The necklace was a perfect match. I’ve never checked out the jewellery at Zellers, never thought to. I worried that it would make my skin green. I didn’t see any green skin on Melissa.
That’s all for me. I’m prepping for my 32nd birthday which will be spent in beautiful Digby Co. Reader Jane is going to be at her cottage as well. I may drag her into Frenchy’s with the video cam so we can make some film magic.
Crappy Pop Video of the Week is once again not a video. It’s a song that reminds me of my late grandmother. Since we’re heading down to her former home, I thought I’d get in the right mindset:
L-A: Can we just clarify that Ally asked me about her dress after we had a few drinks and poured ourselves into a cab? I was probably mumbling because I’m not used to drinking bourbon (mint juleps!). I thought she looked great. I would never wear it, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t cute.
Moving on to my favourite things. As you know, this is Prom Week in Halifax and proms are definitely a favourite. Intern Krista and I have been busy promservationing from the benches in the Public Gardens:
Proms are possibly more fun to watch than they are to attend. At least it seems that way as you snark about dresses you don’t like, rave about the dresses you do like and watch the girls hobble by in shoes that hurt their feet after barely an hour. We have a prom themed announcement coming up, but it needs some work before I can tell you about it. In the meantime, you can either join us for the Promservations Field Trip in person or by twitter. It’s probably more fun in person, especially if you’re the person who spots the teenagers sneaking behind the trees with a flask. We’ll be in our seats by the Gazebo on Saturday around 4:30. You can join us afterwards for some après-prom drinks at a bar near the Gardens. Saturday’s proms are Citadel and Lockview. If you know a prom-goer who wants to be on the blog – let us know! We’d love to have real photos, not ones where we try to sneak a photo and feel like creepy grown ups (which we are not).
Next favourite thing is the Adornable show at the Hydrostone Gallery (which happens to be attached to Lady Luck Boutique, one of our favourite shops).
I stopped by there on my way home from Promservations (it was an awesome Thursday!) and was amazed by the jewellery. The work by these artists is not only beautiful, but wearable and for sale. I first found out about the show through Vanessa Neily’s blog. I already knew I loved Vanessa’s enamel branches from Love, Me and Halifax Crafters shows, so I had a feeling I would be in for a treat at Adornable. I had no idea just how much. It’s a small show, but I loved it. Here’s a few pieces I liked:

If there’s one thing I like more than anything with a nautical theme, it’s mushrooms. I don’t mean shrooms. I mean mushrooms. I know, it’s weird, but I think they’re cute and often tasty (when they are not poisonous). I like pictures and drawings of them. I like them as ceramics. I like seeing them in real life. I like eating them. I like them in jewellery. I just like mushrooms. So it makes sense that I’d like Leah Hunnakko’s jewellery. But then, I’d like her pieces even if I didn’t like mushrooms.
I could go on. In fact, I could tell you about every piece I liked by every artist. Like Vanessa’s necklace/hats and Amanda Fullerton’s amazing barrettes. But then you’d be reading about my favourite things from Friday straight through until Monday. Besides, you can see it all for yourself at the Hydrostone Gallery.
