Final Phase of Street Closures for Roundabout Construction

Wednesday, July 29, 2015 (Halifax, NS) – Construction of a new roundabout near the Halifax North Common is entering its final few weeks, requiring two additional street closures beginning on Monday, Aug. 3.

Currently, Ahern and Trolloppe streets are closed, except to local traffic accessing Citadel High School and the adjoining recreation centre, and inbound traffic from Quinpool Road and Robie Street is not able to access Cogswell Street. All of these closures continue to be in place.

As well, traffic headed downtown cannot access Rainnie Drive at Cogswell. This permanent change went into effect in June. Once the new roundabout opens, Rainnie will be one-way only between Cogswell and Gottingen Street.

In addition to these closures, starting Monday North Park Street will be closed to southbound traffic between Cornwallis and Cogswell streets, and Cogswell will be closed in both directions between North Park and Robie. These closures will remain in place until the roundabout is operational later next month.

Pedestrians and cyclists travelling through the area are reminded to watch for closures and detour signage, which can change regularly depending on the work being done on the greenway trail on the Common.

Barring any weather delays, the municipality expects the roundabout to open by Aug. 24. All of the affected streets will reopen at that time. Further work will be required on the nearby greenway trail and the new pedestrian plazas. That work will continue into September.

The Cogswell roundabout is part of the North Park Intersection Redesign. The two-year project is about more than reconfiguring intersections — it is a bold approach to a larger civic project that includes many disciplines, departments and goals. Redesigning the area allows for significant neighbourhood improvements, including upgraded street, pedestrian and cycling infrastructure and high quality public spaces.
