Government has approved regulations that officially provide U-Vints and U-Brews legal status in the province.
These regulations will help develop a sustainable and competitive environment for operators and customers who want to make their own beer and wine.
Amendments to the Liquor Control Act allowing ferment-on-premises are effective today, Oct. 29.
“We are pleased to have eliminated a barrier for small businesses in Nova Scotia. This is the final step in a process of supporting a growing industry,” said Diana Whalen, Minister of Finance and Treasury Board. “This legislation will help small businesses in Nova Scotia prosper, hire new people and grow our economy.”
Government first announced plans to legalize U-Vint and U-brew operations in January. Consultations with industry representatives, operators, consumers and health professionals began soon after.
As suggested during the consultations, regulations balance the needs of the industry while protecting the health and safety of Nova Scotians. It provides a regulatory framework that gives Nova Scotians more choice, while creating a competitive business environment with potential for growth.
“Government has worked closely with this industry to develop a clear set of rules that will provide small businesses with stability and the opportunity to grow,” said Ms. Whalen. “This allows the industry to offer the U-Vint and U-Brew services for which the public has asked.”
Service Nova Scotia will be responsible for licensing and enforcement.
