Financial Assistance Announced to Help with Flooding

Cape Bretoners who need financial help after historic flooding will be supported with assistance from the province.

Premier Stephen McNeil announced today, Oct. 14, that the province will give the United Way of Cape Breton $500,000 for emergency funding to help those who need basic necessities.

“We’ve seen Cape Bretoners pull together, as they always do, to help one another through this difficult time. I saw the damage first-hand and spoke with homeowners, many of whom have lost a great deal,” said Premier McNeil. “Cape Bretoners can be assured that the province stands with them. We will help them get back on their feet and will work with the Cape Breton Regional Municipality to get the area repaired.”

The premier has also spoken to the federal government about triggering a Disaster Financial Assistance Program. Homeowners, small businesses, farmers, municipalities and not-for-profit organizations will be eligible to apply.

“The federal minister of public safety is in Cape Breton today. He and I have spoken about the importance of helping the people of Cape Breton and expediting a financial relief program. I expect to have details about that very soon,” said Premier McNeil.

Residents are asked to continue to assess damage, keep all receipts, and take pictures and video, as well as work with their insurance companies.

The Cape Breton Regional Municipality has opened a help line to help prioritize the greatest needs and provide information to citizens. Residents can call 902-562-HELP or email stormhelpline@cbrm.ns.ca . The help line will operate Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday, noon to 6 p.m.

The Cape Breton Regional Municipality will also conduct a city-wide heavy garbage cleanup beginning the first week of November. A schedule will be announced at a later date.

The Cape Breton Regional Municipality and the Red Cross have set up a shelter and comfort centre at Centre 200, 481 George St., Sydney. Residents who need transportation to Centre 200 are asked to call the non-emergency police dispatch line at 902-563-5151.

Nova Scotians and others who wish to support those impacted by the floods can donate through the United Way of Cape Breton by visiting http://www.unitedwaycapebreton.com/.
