The Department of Emergency Management is reminding Nova Scotians that fireworks are prohibited in areas where the daily burn ban is in effect.
Dry weather can increase wildfire risk. Aligning fireworks restrictions with existing burn bans helps ensure residents, visitors and event organizers have clear and consistent guidance to support public safety and protect communities, forests and property.
“Summer is a time for fun, but it’s also a time when dry conditions can quickly turn a spark into a wildfire,” said Kim Masland, Minister of Emergency Management. “Before using fireworks, take a moment to check your local burn restrictions. It’s a simple step that helps protect our communities, our forests and the people who call Nova Scotia home.”
The restriction applies to all consumer fireworks sold at retail outlets, as well as display fireworks and pyrotechnic special effects used for larger public events and performances.
People can determine whether fireworks are permitted in their area by checking the daily provincial BurnSafe map. Areas shown in red indicate that open burning is prohibited and, under the advisory, fireworks and pyrotechnics are also not permitted.

Quick Facts:
- the BurnSafe map is updated daily at 2 p.m. to reflect current fire conditions across the province
- wildfire season runs from March 15 to October 15 every year
- failure to comply with the advisory will result in a fine of $25,000 under the Fire Safety Act
