Onwards and upwards with another fish ‘n chips quest! I took LuShark to Queensland Beach and en route we stopped at Maya’s Famous Fish ‘n Chips, which you’ll find on French Village Station Road next to the Esso and Tantallon Elementary School. It’s just a small spot (cash only!) with parking and outdoor seating but a lot of love goes into the food.

We ordered a two piece fish ‘n chips ($11.50). We didn’t get any coleslaw and tartar sauce is packaged Kraft. But on the plus side, there are spray bottles of vinegar that you can liberally apply to your platter.

The fish is very fresh and battered to order. I could see the bowl of batter and nary a sad blanched fish. The batter was nice and crispy, without that annoying mushy interface that so often plagues a fish fry.

The fries were hand-cut but flavourless. We vigorously applied salt and vinegar but it didn’t seem to help. I would say that the lack of flavour was the biggest weakness of this meal.

Maya’s is still a good stop on your way to the beach. They do a family pack ($38.95) that includes 8 pieces of fish, a family sized fries, large gravy & coleslaw. I hear the clams are good. You may want to try Neptune’s Platter ($26.50): 2pc fish, whole clams, scallops, fries and 2 coleslaw (a smaller serving exists for $19.50).
