Five Outstanding Nova Scotians Honoured at Province House

Five outstanding Nova Scotians were officially invested into the Order of Nova Scotia for their lasting contributions in the areas of medicine, mental-health support, historical research, and social issues at a ceremony held today, Dec. 3.

Lt.-Gov. J.J. Grant, Chancellor of the Order of Nova Scotia, was joined by Premier Stephen McNeil to invest the recipients into the order during the 13th investiture ceremony held at Province House in Halifax.

“Through their remarkable achievements and passion for helping others, the individuals we honour today inspire Nova Scotians to strive for excellence in all facets of life,” said Lt.-Gov. J.J. Grant. “On behalf of the Queen and all Nova Scotians, I extend my sincere thanks to the recipients for their life-long service to our province.”

The 2014 Order of Nova Scotia recipients are:
— poet and playwright Walter Marven Borden, New Glasgow
— pediatrician Dr. Richard Ballon Goldbloom, Halifax
— psychiatrist Dr. Stanley Paul Kutcher, Herring Cove
— professor and social worker Dr. Wanda Elaine Thomas Bernard, East Preston
— scholar and historian Ruth Holmes Whitehead, Halifax

The recipients were selected by the Order of Nova Scotia Advisory Council from 117 nominations.

“This year’s recipients have made outstanding contributions to our communities through their dedication to improving the lives of their fellow Nova Scotians,” said Viola Robinson, chair of the Advisory Council. “We must also recognize those who have taken the time to nominate them for this prestigious honour.

“Nominations for the Order of Nova Scotia continue to rise, and I encourage people to nominate or re-nominate deserving Nova Scotians.”

The Order of Nova Scotia was established in June 2001 and is the highest honour bestowed by the province. Recipients have the right to use the initials O.N.S. after their names.
