Food banks seek back to school supplies

Our local food banks are looking for back to school supplies, and I know they would welcome any donations of pens, pencils, backpacks, paper, or anything that can be used during the school year (that includes calculators, etc for older children, too).

I was on a story for CBC today and calling around to the various food banks, and when I reached Emmanuel Church food bank at 322 Herring Cove Road they asked, “How did you know we were low on school supplies?”

Turns out, they called their suppliers at Feed Nova Scotia just yesterday to say they really have nothing left. There’s a small box with some duo tangs, a couple of binders, a few pencils, and a half-empty pack of crayons. But that is not going to go very far. Esther Faulkner runs the food bank and she told me they very much need donations to give out the last week of August, so if anyone has extras, here are some locations that would be very happy to receive them.

Emmanuel Anglican Church – 322 Herring Cove Road, across from the Royal Bank. Call 477-1783 for the food bank, which is in the white building behind the church. Distribution happens on Thursday mornings.

Saint Paul’s Family Resources Institute – 173 Old Sambro Road. Call 477-5090 to register for Wednesday afternoon food bank distribution.

Greystone Tenants Association & Food Bank – 2 & 4 Cranberry Court. Call 446-3130 for more info.

And here’s the CBC News article, which also mentions the Parker Street Food and Furniture Bank, if you are closer to central Halifax.
