Fraud Alert: Phony Elections Nova Scotia emails making the rounds

Elections Nova Scotia has been made aware that a phishing email is circulating that appears to be from Elections Nova Scotia. The email content talks about internet voting and asks the reader to click various links within the email.

This is a scam, like bank scams, someone is pretending to be Elections Nova Scotia.

There is no internet voting in the Nova Scotia Provincial General Election.

It is important for voters in Nova Scotia to know that Elections Nova Scotia does not send emails to voters soliciting personal information using links (e.g. click here). Elections Nova Scotia only communicates with voters by email if a voter has first contacted us by email. If you have not contacted Elections Nova Scotia by email, we will not send you an email.

“The integrity of the electoral process and the safety of voters’ personal information is important to Elections Nova Scotia so we are responding as quickly as possible to the scam,” says Dorothy Rice, Chief Electoral Officer of Nova Scotia.

If you have received this fraudulent email or believe you have been victim of a fraud, please report it to the Canada Anti-Fraud Centre. For information, please visit www.antifraudcentre.ca, or call their toll-free number at 888-495-8501.

Elections Nova Scotia has informed the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security of this scam and has also called the RCMP.
