Fraudsters calling people asking to confirm personal information

Lunenburg District RCMP has received several calls indicating fraudsters have been contacting residents, and are attempting to get their Social Insurance (SIN) information. One man confirmed the last three digits of his SIN to the caller, then realized what he had done and notified the RCMP.

The RCMP is advising the public that legitimate companies will never call to ask anyone for credit or financial information over the phone. They may ask you to verify personal details if you call them first. If you receive a call from anyone who asks for your personal or financial information, you can request their phone number, do some research of your own, and call them back if you’ve determined they are legitimate. Research might include contacting police, your bank, the credit bureau, or checking online.

The RCMP is reminding everyone to ensure they have strong passwords on their accounts and to update them periodically.
