The province is offering commercial truckers free brake inspections Tuesday, Sept. 10, during Brake Safety Awareness Week.

Brake checks are available from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Kelly Lake Vehicle Compliance Station on Highway 102, near the Halifax Stanfield International Airport.

The free inspections are part of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s Brake Safety Awareness Week which takes place across North America.

“These big rigs travel at high speeds so it’s important to make sure the brakes are in top shape,” said Raymond Beaton, director, Vehicle Compliance for the Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal. “This event helps drivers and mechanics see how brakes operate and how critical it is to inspect and maintain them.”

“This annual event provides members of the trucking industry with education about how to conduct a proper brake-adjustment inspection and reinforces that it is a crucial component of a pre-trip inspection,” said Linda Corkum, executive director of the Nova Scotia Trucking Safety Association. “The goal of all industry partners at this event is to promote safety for everyone.”

Safety literature and refreshments will be provided. The purpose of the event is education and inspection to improve highway safety. No enforcement action will be taken.
