Free Fishing This Weekend

People are encouraged to try their hand at fishing during Nova Scotia Sportfishing Weekend, Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7.

Residents and non-residents can fish without a general fishing licence during the annual event.

“Whether you’re a seasoned fishing enthusiast or it’s the first time you put your line in the water, I encourage people to come out and fish,” said Keith Colwell, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture.

“Go to your favourite fishing spot or participate in one of the 24 fishing derbies that will be taking place over the weekend.”

A list of fishing derbies is available at http://novascotia.ca/fish/sportfishing .

More than 70,000 people participate in sportfishing each year, making it one of the province’s most popular active outdoor sports. It contributes about $58 million to Nova Scotia’s economy each year.

Mr. Colwell encourages all anglers to put safety first when fishing this season.

“Sportfishing is a unique and enjoyable outdoor experience, but I would like to remind all anglers to use caution this season and enjoy the outdoors safely,” said Mr. Colwell. “I especially urge those on the water to use floatation devices.”

Although a licence is not required on free sportfishing weekend, all bag limits and other regulations still apply. Regulations and more information on sport fishing in Nova Scotia can be found at http://novascotia.ca/fish .
