Funding for Yarmouth Public Transit Services

The public transit service in Yarmouth will be able to upgrade buses, bus shelters and more thanks to a $25,000 provincial grant.

The funding is part of the Public Transit Assistance Program. The program provides annual grants to help cover the costs of capital assets such as new buses and vans, upgrades to vehicles, bus shelters, and vehicle garages.

“Public transit is an important service that contributes to healthy, sustainable communities,” said Municipal Affairs Minister Zach Churchill. “This funding will help the transit service in Yarmouth upgrade their vehicles and facilities to meet the needs of their citizens.”

These annual grants are for transit services that offer fixed route service or a combination of fixed and flexible route service. The formula for the grant is based on total annual ridership and the population in the area of the transit service.

“We are tremendously thankful for the announcement of provincial funding to our public transit system,” said Mayor Pam Mood of Yarmouth. “The Town of Yarmouth has worked hard to ensure this valuable and necessary infrastructure is in place to make our entire community more accessible to all and we are excited to enhance the service further with this funding.”

Through the Public Transit Assistance Program, six public transit services across the province will receive $2.9 million for upgrades to buses, bus shelters and more.

This grant is in addition to the infrastructure funding announced last week by the federal government under the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund. The clean water and wastewater project in the Town of Yarmouth includes approximately $860,000 in both provincial and municipal support, in addition to the $1.7 million federal investment.

Funding will go toward the Brown Street and Cliff Street sewer separation project.
