Funding to Help Communities Address Flood Risks

The province announced funding today, April 26, to help four communities reduce the risk of floods.

Half the project costs will be covered with an investment of about $243,000 through the Flood Risk Infrastructure Investment Program. The municipalities provide the other 50 per cent.

“The past few years have been a reminder of the devastation that floods can cause for families, businesses, and organizations,” said Municipal Affairs Minister Zach Churchill. “I’m pleased to support projects to help municipalities identify and reduce the risk of floods.”

The municipalities receiving funding for 2017-18 are:
— Cape Breton Regional Municipality: $100,000 for Wash Brook floodwater containment and flood intensity mitigation
— Kings County: $12,500 toward a flooding hazard plan for Meadowview
— Municipality of the District of Lunenburg: $104,286 for phase two of LaHave River flood plain land use planning
— Municipality of the District of West Hants: $26,073 for a flood water impact study for Hantsport

The Flood Risk Investment Program, announced in 2014, is an annual program that provides funding to municipalities for projects that identify or mitigate flood risks.
