Fundy Geological Museum Launches Exciting New Programs

Visitors will have the chance to dig for dinosaur bones this summer with the new excursion Tidal Reveal: Dig for Canada’s Oldest Dinosaurs.

Tidal Reveal is one of several new events and exhibits announced by the Fundy Geological Museum in Parrsboro for the 2017 summer season. It includes a boat trip along the scenic Bay of Fundy shore, arriving at a Jurassic dinosaur dig where participants will assist museum staff in searching for real dinosaur bones.

“The dino dig is a really exciting opportunity for people to experience the beauty of our Bay of Fundy shore, and to work with us to find new dinosaur bones,” said Regan Maloney, fossil lab manager at the museum. “It’s a great research site because it’s where the oldest dinosaurs in Canada have been found.”

New exhibits and specimens are now on display in the museum’s exhibit gallery, including a 3D animation showing the dinosaur skeletons previously collected at the research site. The exhibits also include mineral specimens and fossils.

“There are many new things to see in the museum gallery and lots of new beach tours being offered this year,” said Tim Fedak, director and curator at the Fundy Geological Museum. “We are very excited for the upcoming season.”

Last year the dinosaur digs uncovered important new fossils of small lizard-like animals and mammal-like reptiles, along with a skull bone from a dinosaur that researchers hope to find more of this year.

The Fundy Geological Museum showcases geological history interpreted from the unique features of Nova Scotia’s Fundy region. Open all year, it attracts over 22,000 visitors annually and includes an exhibition gallery, lab space, a multi-purpose room, gift shop and administration offices.

A commitment to stewardship of Nova Scotia’s cultural and natural worlds is a vital part of the province’s recently unveiled culture strategy, Nova Scotia’s Culture Action Plan. The full plan is online at novascotia.ca/culture.
