Furniture Making Workshops at Sutherland Steam Mill

Sutherland Steam Mill Museum in Denmark, Colchester Co., near Tatamagouche, will host woodworking workshops this summer and fall with renowned Nova Scotia furniture maker Jonathan Otter.

After a successful pilot last year, the museum is offering a variety of workshops that are almost entirely hands-on using hand tools.

“Sutherland Steam Mill is an excellent backdrop to share the experience of furniture making with Nova Scotians who want to explore their creative nature through such a beautiful and functional art form,” said Mr. Otter. “It is a pleasure to teach people new skills to help them work on projects of their own.”

The next workshop is Saturday, Aug. 30, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students can learn to cut and glue through dovetail joints, cut and smooth curves, and finish a small step stool. Students can take their project home when they are done.

“When I visited Sutherland Steam Mill recently, I was delighted to hear Mr. Otter had offered to do these courses,” said Communities, Culture and Heritage Minister Tony Ince. “It’s a perfect fit for the experience this museum offers visitors and allows participants to learn from an award-winning Nova Scotia artisan.”

Sutherland Steam Mill Museum is located at 3169 Highway 326, Denmark. For details and a complete list of courses go to, http://sutherlandsteammill.novascotia.ca/workshops-jonathan-otter .
