May is Gaelic Month in Nova Scotia and a time to celebrate Gaelic culture, language and heritage and the contributions of Nova Scotia Gaels.
This year’s theme is The Power of Our Songs/ Brìgh na Bàrdachd. MLA Brendan Maguire, on behalf of Minister of Gaelic Affairs Randy Delorey, officially kicked off the month today, May 1, with a flag raising at Province House in Halifax.
“As we celebrate the vibrant and living Gaelic culture and language, we should reflect on its importance to our Nova Scotian identity,” said Mr. Maguire. “This month’s theme – The Power of Our Songs- is one part of the Gael’s rich culture that enriches Nova Scotia’s collective cultural identity.”
An estimated one third of Nova Scotians have Gaelic heritage. This month is an invitation for them to connect or reconnect with their Gaelic language, culture and identity. It is also an invitation to all Nova Scotians to learn more about Gaelic language, culture and heritage, and the contributions Nova Scotia Gaels make to the province’s diversity and culture.
Online, people can share songs on Twitter using the hashtags #GaelicNS and #ThePowerOfOurSongs, or at facebook.com/gaelicaffairs.
