Several well-known Haligonians gathered at George Israel’s Clayton Park abode this past Friday night in celebration of the Halifax convenience store proprietor’s 60th birthday.
Among the crowd of 40 feting George, whose birthday was actually May 2, were Banc Properties head Besim Halef; MetOcean Data Systems president Tony Chedrawy; Father Maximos Saikali, archpriest of St.
Antonio’s Orthodox Church; famed urologist Dr. Joe Lawen; Pizza Girls guy Joe Dib; and, of course, George’s wife Katia.
The surprise festivities were organized by George’s daughter, Christina, an account manager at RBC in Upper Tantallon .
The affair was catered by party attendee Tony Nahas’s Mezza Restaurant, which I hear is planning to open an eatery in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
A long-time fixture at Gottingen and Bilby Streets, George’s Israel Convenience was ravaged by fire in 2011 and has since been operating on Almon.
Another George-owned company, Nic I. Holdings, plans to erect a seven-story mixed-use (commercial-and residential) development at the previous location.
