Get ready for spring tree planting

Tuesday, June 21, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – Our annual spring street tree planting starts to take shape this week in Colby Village.

Two-hundred new trees will be planted along sections of 10 streets in the community, beginning with Southampton Drive tomorrow morning (Wednesday).

Halifax Regional Council approved HRM’s Urban Forest Master Plan (UFMP) in 2012. Since then, more than 4,600 new street trees have been planted. This year’s goal is to plant an additional 1,600 trees.

Along with Colby Village, new trees will be planted this spring in Fairview, Lower Sackville, Dartmouth, Eastern Passage, and peninsular Halifax.

HRM’s urban forest consists of all trees within the urban core, including street trees, park trees, and trees on private and public land. The goal of the plan is to ensure a sustainable future for our urban forest and to create awareness about the many benefits that we all gain from the trees in our neighbourhoods.

The following Colby Village streets will see new trees, beginning this week:

  • Chaswood Drive
  • Coronation Crescent
  • Delta Drive
  • Donegal Drive
  • Edgecombe Crescent
  • Evelyn Wood Place
  • Galway Road
  • Morris Lake Drive
  • Southampton Drive
  • Wexford Road

Nineteen hardy tree species have been selected. In years to come these trees will beautify the neighbourhood and grow tall to form a protective canopy cover.

The progress of the UFMP street tree planting project is being monitored by faculty and students from Dalhousie University’s School for Resource and Environmental Studies (SRES).

Monitoring crews will be visiting neighbourhoods soon to evaluate the condition of the new street trees and to note any diseased or dead trees to be removed under the replacement warranty provided by our tree planting contractors. In the meantime, please remember you can report street tree damage to our Citizen Call Centre at 311.

The UFMP website will be updated on a regular basis to help residents stay informed about upcoming planting schedules and volunteer opportunities. Visit the website at
