Go Take a Hike

From what I understand, there’s a beautiful hike in Nova Scotia called Cape Split.  The reason I say “from what I understand” is because I’ve never hiked it.  I’m someone who is very outdoorsy, as you know I’m very active, I love camping, I love sports and I love the wilderness, but I’ve never been someone who liked hiking.

Before my drive across Canada, I had never been on a hike before.  I had been invited to hike Cape Split more times than I can count, but I always thought that walking for 4 or 5 hours up and down a hill was pointless and stupid. Who the hell wants to walk that much?

Well, apparently, I do?!

After going on a hike in Jasper, Alberta, I fell in love with hiking and it’s now become a weekend adventure for the missus and I in the North. We’ve found three hikes here so far that we love and are looking forward to finding more.

I’ve now learned why people walk up and down hills for 3 to 5 hours.  The scenery is usually beautiful and It’s a great way to spend a beautiful sunny summer’s day.  Not to mention, it’s a great way to get exercise. My pack on Saturday weighed in at 30 lbs and on the 8 km hike we did two weeks ago, I burned over 900 calories.  Between the added weight of the pack and the climbing and hiking, it’s a nice little workout.

We packed 3 Gatorate G2s, fruit salad, 3 chicken breasts, beef jerkey and I made us our own trail mix with almond slivers, cashews, wallnuts, banana chips, dried pommegranite and pumpkin seeds.

I can’t wait to keep trying out different hikes in Yellowknife and I’m really looking forward to doing more hikes around the world.

Do you ever go for hikes? Have you ever turned down a hike? If you have, learn from my mistakes and go take a hike.

Here’s some pics of our hike on Saturday and a video of a 360 panoramic view from where we had a picnic.
