(Files via Laura Secord release)
If you’ve ever grabbed a box of chocolates before heading to a birthday party, stopped for an ice cream cone on a hot day, or just wandered into Laura Secord for that comforting smell of fudge, you’re not alone.
Now, that familiar little corner of sweetness is about to disappear.
Laura Secord at Mic Mac Mall is officially closing its doors this month, ending an incredible run that stretches all the way back to the mall’s earliest days in the 1970s. It was one of the original stores when the mall opened in 1973.
It’s not just a shop. It’s a memory.
For a lot of people in HRM, this spot was a quiet constant. A place you passed by a thousand times and maybe didn’t think much about, until you realized it had always been there. Chocolate gift boxes, maple fudge, seasonal Easter bunnies, and those classic mint meltaways were all part of the vibe.
Mic Mac Mall itself has gone through a lot over the years. Simpsons became The Bay. Dominion is long gone. The food court has had more facelifts than most of us. But Laura Secord just stayed.
Until now.
There hasn’t been a big announcement. Just a quiet removal from the mall directory and some online chatter from people wondering why their go-to chocolate stop is closing. Based on retail listings, the closure is expected to happen by the end of August.
Maybe it’s just another retail shift. Maybe it’s a sign of the times. But either way, it feels different when something that has been part of the community for over 50 years disappears.
So if you’re headed to Mic Mac Mall this week, maybe stop by Laura Secord one last time. Get the truffles. Grab the maple creams. Tell them thanks.
It’s the end of an era. One sweet piece of Mic Mac Mall history is saying goodbye.
