Got household hazards like motor oil, cleaners and fluorescent bulbs? HRM hosting special waste disposals

Thursday, June 26, 2025 (Halifax, N.S.) The municipality is hosting several mobile events to support residents in properly disposing of special household waste and sensitive paper documents.

Shred Instead event

Have sensitive paper documents you’d like to shred? Bring them to the upcoming Shred Instead event to have them disposed of safely, at no cost.

Date: Saturday, July 5

Time: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Location: 450 Cowie Hill Road – Halifax Water parking lot  

This free event will take place rain or shine. Shredding documents is a great way to protect against identity theft. There is a limit of three boxes per household. This event is for residents only. Business waste will not be accepted.

Mobile Household Special Waste events

Residents looking to dispose of household special waste not acceptable for curbside collection can bring their materials to upcoming Mobile Household Special Waste events. These events will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.:

Location: Musquodoboit Valley Education Centre – 12046 NS-224, Middle Musquodoboit

Location: Horizon Elementary School – 168 Redoubt Way, Eastern Passage

Location: Georges P. Vanier Junior High School – 1410 Fall River Road, Fall River

The mobile drop-off depots will take place rain or shine. Business waste is not permitted. 

Household special waste materials accepted include:

  • gasoline (fuel containers will not be given back to residents at mobile events)
  • fuel oil and used motor oil
    • also accepted at retail collection sites through the Atlantic Used Oil Management Association’s Recycle My Oil program
  • barbecue propane tanks
  • small propane cylinders (e.g. camp stoves and propane torches)
  • aerosol cans containing hazardous substances
  • corrosive cleaners
  • solvents
  • thinners
  • liquid paint in labeled paint cans
    • paint and empty paint cans may also be returned to any Enviro-Depot
  • pesticides/herbicides
  • pharmaceuticals and drugs
  • batteries
  • single use vapes (all-in-one) and rechargeable vape batteries (cartridges must be removed)
  • CFL and fluorescent bulbs

Household Special Waste Depot
The municipality also operates a permanent Household Special Waste Depot at 20 Horseshoe Lake Drive. Drop-off times are on most Saturdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The depot is open only to residents of the Halifax Regional Municipality. Business waste is not permitted.
