Government issues recall on kids hoodies due to strangulation hazard

A recent recall has been issued for the AKMI Kids Crop Top Plaid Long Sleeve Hoodie, sold through Walmart.ca, due to a strangulation hazard. This recall, prompted by Health Canada’s sampling and evaluation program, highlights the risks associated with the drawstring in the hoodie. The program identified that the drawstring could potentially catch on various objects, such as playground equipment or fences, posing a strangulation hazard. In more severe scenarios, if caught in a vehicle, it could lead to the child being dragged.

The product in question is a light green crop top hoodie, notable for its checkered pattern on the sleeves and distinctive pineapple embroidery. It was available for purchase from August 2023 to October 2023 and was sold and shipped by independent third-party sellers on Walmart.ca. Despite the lack of reported incidents or injuries in Canada as of October 27, 2023, consumers are urged to take immediate action.

Consumers who have purchased this product are advised to either remove the drawstring to eliminate the hazard or return the product for a full refund. For further assistance or information, customers can reach out to Hangzhou Duoyimei Technology Co., Ltd, also known as “askmiss” on Walmart.ca, via email at helian9849@126.com.

It’s important to note that the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act prohibits the redistribution, sale, or even giveaway of recalled products in Canada. Health Canada also encourages consumers to report any health or safety incidents related to this or any other consumer product or cosmetic by completing the Consumer Product Incident Report Form.

This recall is part of a broader international awareness effort and is also posted on the OECD Global Portal on Product Recalls website, where additional information on other international consumer product recalls can be found.

The recall involves a single unit of the affected product sold in Canada, with the product originally manufactured in China. Walmart Canada Corporation, based in Mississauga, ON, Canada, is listed as the retailer, while Hangzhou Duoyimei Technology Co., Ltd, located in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China, is the importer. This consumer product recall falls under the category of clothing and accessories, specifically targeting children’s clothing.
