Nova Scotians are invited to share their views on proposed updates to laws that affect families experiencing separation or custody issues.
Government wants to hear people’s feedback on a discussion paper that explores family law issues including custody, parenting plans, and guidelines when one parent wants to relocate.
“Going through a separation or other family issues can be a confusing and difficult time, especially when children are involved,” said Justice Minister Lena Diab. “We want to update Nova Scotia’s laws so courts and parents have clear directions that help support children’s best interests in every situation.”
The discussion paper outlines proposed changes to the Maintenance and Custody Act, including:
— updating the language to use terms such as parenting time and contact time
— introducing the concepts of parenting plan and parenting arrangements
— developing new guidelines for when a parent wants to relocate
— considering the best options to address a failure to comply with court orders
The paper is available online at http://novascotia.ca/just/consultation .
A paper copy can be requested by calling 902-424-5341. Feedback can be submitted through the website or by e-mailing familylawfeedback@gov.ns.ca by June 30.
