Government Supports Sustainable Transportation in St. Margarets Bay

St. Margarets Bay residents will be better connected to Hammonds Plains Road with support from the province’s sustainable transportation grant program, Connect2.

Environment Minister Iain Rankin, on behalf of Energy Minister Geoff MacLellan, announced today, Sept. 1, $20,000 for the St. Margaret’s Bay Area Rails to Trails Association to resurface a section of the St. Margarets Bay Trail.

“This project will help improve an increasingly popular path connecting many communities all the way from Lewis Lake to Hubbards,” said Mr. Rankin. “Projects like this improve our neighbourhoods, promote active living, and help us reduce our emissions by encouraging walking or cycling.”

The renewed and flatter path between Round Lake Bridge and Hammonds Plains Road Bridge will make it safer to walk, run or cycle.

“We are delighted that trail users are now able to travel safely and comfortably along this busy and popular section of our trail,” said Anne Patrick, chair of the St. Margarets Bay Area Rails to Trails Association.

Connect2 aims to create and promote active transportation options for trips of two kilometres or less between community hubs in rural and urban parts of the province.

This year, Connect2 will support about 22 projects across the province. More projects will be announced in the coming weeks, and all will be completed by the end of March 2018.
