Government Supports Sustainable Transportation in Sydney

Government is supporting continued work on the Grand Lake Multi-use Path in Sydney, connecting residents and visitors with even more community hubs in the city.

Sydney-Whitney Pier MLA Derek Mombourquette, on behalf of Energy Minister Michel Samson, announced support through the province’s sustainable transportation grant program, Connect2.

“The next phase of construction on the Grand Lake Multi-use Path connects people to even more of what our great city has to offer,” said Mr. Mombourquette. “From the start, this has been an ambitious project, and government is pleased to continue its support today.”

Government is providing $100,000 to the Cape Breton Regional Municipality to complete the section of path linking the airport to Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Once construction on this phase of the trail is complete, it will span 3.5 kimometres between Sydney and Glace Bay.

“One of the key goals in our active transportation plan is the 10-kilometre Grand Lake Multi-use Path running through our city and linking important locations in between,” said Mayor Cecil Clarke, Cape Breton Regional Municipality. “This project wouldn’t be possible without the dedicated work of our team at the municipality, volunteers and partners like the Province of Nova Scotia.”

Connect2, launched in May, aims to create and promote active transportation options for trips of two kilometres or less between community hubs in rural and urban parts of the province.

More projects will be announced in the coming weeks, and all will be completed by March 10, 2016.
