Government Supports Sustainable Transportation in the Annapolis Valley

Residents of a community in the Annapolis Valley will have better access to the shops and services they use daily with support from the province’s sustainable transportation grant program, Connect2.

Clare-Digby MLA Gordon Wilson, on behalf of Energy Minister Geoff MacLellan, announced today, Oct. 2, $19,400 for The Municipality of the County of Annapolis to develop a connector from Cornwallis Park to the Basinview Centre.

“This project will help these residents get to the shops and services of the Basinview Centre, without getting in their cars,” said Mr. Wilson. “Projects like this improve our neighbourhoods and help us reduce emissions by encouraging walking and cycling.”

The centre includes a grocery store, post office, restaurants, physical therapy clinic and the Fundy YMCA.

“The County of Annapolis is pleased to be creating a new pathway to make it easier for our residents to get to the grocery store, YMCA and other services,” said Warden Timothy Habiniski. “Better connecting our residents not only creates healthier communities but also makes them safer and more attractive.”

Connect2 aims to create and promote active transportation options for trips of two kilometres or less between community hubs in rural and urban parts of the province.

This year, Connect2 will support about 22 projects across the province. More projects will be announced in the coming weeks, and all will be completed by the end of March 2018.
