Government to Review Plans for Emergency Fuel Supplies

Government will review the province’s fuel supply management system in the wake of failures in the gas supply chain over the past week.

“I am concerned about the industry’s response to a situation that left many people, small businesses and retailers without access to gas during this busy travel season,” said Municipal Affairs Minister Zach Churchill.

Mr. Churchill announced today, Sept. 2, that he will conduct an independent review under the Emergency Management Act into how the system failed and to identify improvements needed to ensure the situation is not repeated.

“We will ensure that our emergency responders – police, fire, and ambulance services, along with health-care workers – are protected in the event of future fuel shortages,” said Mr. Churchill.

The review will look for solutions to ensure that emergency providers are able to deliver services to Nova Scotians without interruption. It will also examine how Nova Scotians can be warned earlier about impending disruptions, and seek improvements in communication between industry and government to ensure that future risks are reduced.

Mr. Churchill said he expects to name a respected third party public safety specialist to lead the review within the next week.
