Gov. Gen. David Johnston will make his first official visit to Nova Scotia from May 31 to June 2. He will be accompanied by his wife Her Excellency Sharon Johnston.
During the three-day visit to Halifax and Cape Breton, Their Excellencies will learn about innovative research and environmental projects underway in Nova Scotia. They will also meet with volunteers, young people and groups that support learning and economic growth.
Their Excellencies will be officially welcomed at Province House where the Governor General will inspect a 100-person guard of honour and deliver official remarks.
Premier Darrell Dexter said Gov. Gen. Johnston and the province share values that are important to Canadians and Nova Scotians.
"Opportunities for young people are very important to this province and this country," said Premier Dexter. "Innovation, enhanced learning and clean technologies will help to create jobs, strengthen the economy and make life better for families. On behalf of all Nova Scotians, I welcome Their Excellencies to our province."
Other highlights of the visit include a tour of the National Research Council, Marine Research Station in Ketch Harbour, a world-class facility where scientists are researching the use of algae to create biofuels for energy sustainability and a greener future.
They will also tour the Centre for the Built Environment at the Waterfront Campus of Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) in Dartmouth. The campus is a living laboratory designed to balance the natural and built environments. Students in trades and technology work collaboratively, as they would in industry, to learn more sustainable building practices.
Their Excellencies will tour the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21. The Governor General will present the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards to young people involved in community service.
While in Cape Breton, the Governor General will visit a Habitat for Humanity site in Glace Bay. He will spend time at Cape Breton University's (CBU) Unama'ki College and participate in a roundtable discussion with CBU Aboriginal graduates on post-secondary education and its link to community economic development in First Nation communities.
Their Excellencies will visit Membertou to learn about the past, present and future leadership of the community and how a collaborative approach to economic development has contributed to its success.
