Governor General to Visit Nova Scotia Next Week

Gov. Gen. Julie Payette will make her first official visit to Nova Scotia from June 26 to 27.

The two-day visit to Halifax, Dartmouth and Lunenburg, will highlight innovation and technology, and she will also meet with young people and organizations.

“On behalf of all Nova Scotians, I welcome the Governor General to our province,” said Premier Stephen McNeil. “We are delighted to have her visit and to have an opportunity to share some of the wonderful experiences Nova Scotia has to offer.”

Premier McNeil will join the Lt.-Gov. Arthur J. LeBlanc, to greet Gov. Gen. Payette at an official ceremony at Government House in Halifax. Upon arrival at Government House, she will receive military honours, including a 50-person guard of honour, the Viceregal Salute and a 21-gun salute from the Maritime Forces Atlantic, 5th Canadian Division and the National Band of the Naval Reserve.

Later that morning, the Governor General will visit the Discovery Centre in Halifax and participate in a discussion on space with elementary students. The Discovery Centre is an interactive science museum that promotes hands-on science that is fun and accessible for people of all ages.

In the afternoon, the Governor General will travel to Lunenburg to sail around the harbor on Bluenose II and meet with the captain and crew. Following the sail, she will attend a reception highlighting Nova Scotia’s seafaring heritage at the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic.

Other highlights of the Governor General’s visit include a tour of a Canadian Coast Guard Vessel in Dartmouth, a visit to 12 Wing Shearwater and participation in the opening ceremony of the 40th edition of the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo.
