Graduates receive RCMP certificates, Halifax, N.S.

Halifax RCMP will present 22 grade 10-12 students with certificates after completing a high school RCMP course.

Since October 2013, Halifax RCMP have been facilitating a full-credit co-operative education course partnership with the Halifax Regional School Board.

As part of the course, RCMP officers taught students from various schools in and around Halifax, including Cole Harbour, Sackville, Tantallon, Bedford and Dartmouth.

Classes were held bi-weekly and covered presentations from a variety of RCMP units such as the Underwater Recovery Team, Emergency Response Team and Explosives Disposal Unit. In addition, students were taken to provincial court for a chance to sit in on a trial, went on a tour of the Halifax Stanfield International Airport where they took part in demonstrations by Canadian Air Transport Security Authority and International Security and visited the Saint Mary’s University Criminology Department. They participated in an impaired vision driving scenario and had the chance to test their physical skills by running a modified Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE) – a test that must be passed by anyone entering the RCMP. The group also had to complete 20 hours of court time on their own and submit weekly reflections to their teachers on what they learned.

The high school RCMP course has been offered in Halifax to students with an interest in policing who apply in September and are selected by teachers, and then approved by the RCMP co-ordinators

‘We are extremely proud of the interest and hard work that the students displayed.’ said Cst. Brenda Elson of the Halifax RCMP. ‘If students were not dressed properly, they got a taste of what cadets go through at the RCMP Training Facility in Regina. Let’s just say a few push ups were done by the students!’

Members of the media are invited to the presentation at the RCMP HQ located at 80 Garland Avenue in Burnside. The event will start at 12:00 p.m.
