Funding was announced today, Jan.19, to support safety and security for seniors and create opportunities so they can become more engaged in their communities.
Fairview-Clayton Park MLA Patricia Arab, on behalf of Leo Glavine, Minister of Seniors, announced a Senior Safety Grant, for Halifax Regional Municipality.
“Older adults live unique and vibrant lives and often benefit from supports and programs tailored to meet their needs,” said Ms. Arab. “It’s important that we build strong and healthy communities so that all citizens can participate and do so in a safe and inclusive environment.”
The Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) Nova Scotia Branch is receiving a $20,000 grant for its safety program. The community-based program will focus on keeping seniors safe and living at home longer.
“This is a really good fit for VON’s existing volunteer-and-donor-supported seniors’ programming,” said Erin Crosby, manager, VON Community Support Services in Halifax. “It will allow us to raise client and family awareness of senior abuse, crime prevention and other health and safety issues, and to provide education and referrals. These are important issues and we’re grateful for the Department of Seniors leadership.”
Support from government helps these programs to improve safety and security for older adults and enables them to participate more fully in their communities.
