Grants Help Keep First Responders Safe

Premier Stephen McNeil announced almost a million dollars today, Oct. 28, for equipment to keep first responders safe.

“When Nova Scotians need help, our first responders, many of whom are volunteers, answer the call,” said Premier McNeil. “This funding will help firefighters, hazardous materials teams, and ground search and rescue volunteers stay safe while they help others.”

The $957,644 in funding is through the Emergency Services Provider Fund. It helps groups buy equipment including personal protective equipment, self-contained breathing apparatus and rescue tools.

The Yarmouth Fire Department is one of 77 groups receiving funding this year. The department will use $15,496 to buy personal protective equipment.

“This funding was a large part of our recruitment plan for new volunteer firefighters,” said Yarmouth Fire Chief John Verrall. “When new members came on board, the funding to equip them with bunker gear was already there. This had a positive impact on their morale and safety.”

Eligible groups can receive up to 50 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $20,000.
