Guide Showcases Provinces Biodiversity

The newly updated Ecological Land Classification guide offers information about Nova Scotia’s biodiversity and its natural features.

The guide organizes the province’s geography into zones and regions with detailed descriptions of climate, elevation, geology, topography, soil, vegetation and other markers. Ecological Land Classification is a common method used to describe and map ecosystems allowing us to study and understand the relationship between wildlife and the physical environment.

“Understanding our biodiversity and natural features is key to managing those resources for everyone’s benefit. This guide is a tool for landscape planning and sustainable use of natural resources,” said Peter Neily, co-author of the guide and forester for the Department of Natural Resources. “Each region of Nova Scotia has distinct features and recognizing these characteristics will increase enjoyment and knowledge of our province.”

The guide and related data is available online at https://novascotia.ca/natr/forestry/ecological/ecolandclass.asp

Printed copies can be ordered from the Department of Natural Resources for $10 plus HST by calling 902-424-8633 or e-mailing DNR.Library@novascotia.ca .
