Halifax Burger Week 2018 Preview – Part 2

We are now only TWO days away from the most burgerful time of the year, and you can almost taste all of the mouth-watering beef (and various other meat/veggie options)!

I’ve once again been taking on the difficult task of trying so many delicious burger offerings for this year’s event, with the goal of reporting back my findings of which burgers are a MUST try this time around.

For Part 2, I tackled three more burgers in the Burger Week lineup that you won’t want to miss. Check out what Black Sheep, The Watch That Ends the Night, and Krave are cooking up later this week!

If you haven’t seen it yet, check out Part 1 of the preview series for three more burger sneak peeks!

Black Sheep

Black Sheep Final

Burger: The Whole Farm – Beef patty, braised lamb shoulder, fried goat cheese, duck confit, double-smoked bacon jam, over-easy egg, honey mustard, spicy mayo and sprouts, served on a house-made bun

Price: $17 with $4 going to Feed Nova Scotia

Last year, Black Sheep offered up a Lamb Burger for Burger Week that set the bar pretty high for lamb based burgers in this city. This year, they once again pulled out all the stops and created a burger that is going to blow a lot of people away, and is sure to make a lot of ‘best burgers’ lists.

Appropriately named The Whole Farm, this burger incorporates almost pretty much every farm animal in some shape or form. Starting with a juicy beef patty, and followed by delicious braised lamb shoulder and sweet double smoked bacon jam, this one is sure to bring a tear to every meat lover’s eye.

On the not-so-meaty side, you are treated to fried goat cheese and duck confit, which is then topped with a fried egg, and finished with sprouts (which in my opinion is a completely underused option when it comes to burgers).

I cannot speak highly enough of this burger, and it is already an early contender for one of my favourites of the week. Trust me when I say you DO NOT want to sleep on this one!

The Watch That Ends the Night

The Watch Final

Burger: Canadian Meatloaf – All-Canadian cheeseburger meatloaf, cheddar cheese, mustard, ketchup, horseradish mayonnaise and frisee lettuce

Price: $16 with $1 going to Feed Nova Scotia

The Watch That Ends the Night is the new kid on the Dartmouth block, and people have been raving about them ever since they opened their doors. With a menu that is both eclectic and original, it only makes sense that they would come up with a burger for Burger Week that was a bit outside of the norm.

Playing on that home-cooked dish that I’m sure most people have probably had at least once in their lives, the Canadian Meatloaf burger starts out with a thick slice of savoury meatloaf that is a thing of dreams, and is only further enhanced by the melted cheddar that is draped over it. Add in the horseradish mayo for a bit of a kick, and the result is a very well rounded burger.

Don’t let the somewhat simplistic composition of this burger fool you. There is a lot of flavour packed in the slice of meatloaf, and the ingredients that accompany it, and I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed every single bite. It has comfort written all over it, and it’s reminiscent of meatloaf that’s just like mom used to make!

Krave

Krave Final

Burger: Bacon Jam Cheeseburger – Grass-fed beef patty, topped with real cheddar, pickles, Krave sauce and sweet-and-smokey bacon jam on a butter-toasted bun

Price: $6

While Halifax Burger Week is a tradition in its own right, another tradition I like to take part in every year is chowing down on the Bacon Jam Cheeseburger from Krave.

The beautiful thing about this burger is that it accomplishes so much while remaining relatively simple. Like I’ve said before, where this burger kills it is all in the condiments. Don’t get me wrong, the beef is great and the pickles are everything you want them to be, but the tag-team duo that is the creamy Krave sauce and the hugely popular sweet and smokey bacon jam is a knockout!

If you haven’t had the pleasure of feasting on the staple that is the Bacon Jam Cheeseburger, then I’m only going to assume that you are new to Halifax, or that you just don’t know how to Burger Week properly. In either case, just do yourself a favour and add Krave to your burger itinerary.

Let me know which burgers you are looking forward to over on Instagram and Twitter!
