My first stop on the second day of Burger Week was Ace Burger at Gus’ Pub. The “Jughead Burger” is a classic cheeseburger with fried onions and bacon. Nothing too special, just a really solid burger from Ace.
Satisfying as always, and delicious with a pint of Gus’ 65m Ale from North Brewing Company.
Next stop was Flip Burger for their Mac ‘n’ Cheese Burger. This actually had a big crispy slab of deep fried mac ‘n’ cheese made from Foxhill Cheese. Check out the side profile:
It also had braised Oulton’s short rib, pickled onion, smoked tomato, dijon aioli and homemade spicy ketchup. I really liked the novelty of the fried mac ‘n’ cheese, and I’m lovin’ the use of local ingredients. I found the ketchup to be a little overpowering for the burger, but I have a ketchup sensitivity. Everyone else in my party were quite pleased and satisfied.
Since there are two restaurants doing mac’n’cheese themed burgers, I wanted to do a side by side comparison. So I took a jaunt up to Relish for a $5 Mac Attack. This item couldn’t have been any more different than Flip Burger’s mac ‘n’ cheese burger. What I got were two little sliders with waffle fries filling in for buns. The mac ‘n’ cheese was barely detectable compared to Flip Burger’s giant deep fried hunk, but the flavours were nice. Relish’s signature beet relish was even in the mix. I really enjoyed these.
Just when I thought I couldn’t eat any more, I ventured down the street to Freeman’s. I didn’t originally intend on incorporating Freeman’s into my burger journey, but it was just sort of right there. Freeman’s Burger Week special is a Cranberry Chipotle Cheddar Burger. I was impressed with the beefy goodness of the hand made patty. The cranberry cheddar and chipotle sauce were not pretty to look at, but it was dark in the bar and my taste buds didn’t mind. This was a good burger and a nice ending to my second day of burger gorging.
I know this post is a day late, but I will get caught up tomorrow morning with my report on Day 3 of Burger Week. I have a busy day of burger touring tomorrow, so if you see me downtown with my “Burger Ambassador” sash on – come say hi!
