Halifax District RCMP arrest 911 call prankster, Hammonds Plains, N.S.

Halifax District RCMP arrested a 17-year-old youth after six prank 911 calls were made from a pay phone on the Hammonds Plains Rd.

After receiving numerous 911 hang-up calls, Halifax District RCMP identified the location of the calls as being near a convenience store and the suspect was identified.

As officers attempted to make the arrest, the youth confronted them with a knife in a threatening manner. The youth complied with officer’s demands to drop the knife and was taken into custody without incident.

The 17-year-old remains in custody facing charges including Assault with a Weapon, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Possession of a Weapon Dangerous to the Public and Breach of a Court Order. The young person is expected to appear in Youth Criminal Justice Court on Tuesday, September 8, 2015.

Prank calls to 911 divert the attention of first responders from handling real emergencies. The 911 system should only be used when crimes are in progress or when people and property are being threatened.
