This past weekend, Halifax District RCMP were out reminding motorists to keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel during checkpoints focused on distracted driving traffic laws. Checkpoints were conducted on three busy roadways including Caldwell Rd. in Cole Harbour and Cobequid Rd. and Downsview Rd. in Lower Sackville.
“We are continuously trying to reinforce the message that taking your eyes off the road for only seconds can lead to serious collisions and injuries” says S/Sgt. Terry Barrett, Halifax District RCMP. “Checkpoints are a great opportunity for members to have face-to-face conversations with motorists and remind them firsthand that when driving, their focus must be on the road.”
Eight drivers were charged for using handheld cellular devices while driving, and three other traffic-related tickets were issued during the checkpoints. In Nova Scotia, the fine for using a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle is $237.50.
Distracted Driving is one of the four factors that can cause serious injury and fatal collisions on Nova Scotia highways. The RCMP will continue to conduct checkpoints in an effort to reduce distracted drivers on our roads.
