Halifax District RCMP are investigating after two parents received disturbing phone calls yesterday.
On Tuesday, December 2nd just before 9 a.m., Halifax District RCMP responded to two separate complaints of phone calls alleging a kidnapping had occurred, one in Tantallon and the other in Cole Harbour.
In both instances, a male caller with a heavy accent left voice mails on the complainants phones stating their children had been kidnapped and to call him back or else. The caller did not leave a return telephone number. Both complainants immediately contacted their children to confirm they were safe then called RCMP to report the incidents.
RCMP believe both of these calls were hoaxes and are investigating them as harassing in nature.
Anyone experiencing similar calls to these are asked to report them to RCMP/police immediately. Also *57 feature should be used to trace calls and this information can be turned over to police during the course of an investigation.
How to use Call Trace (*57 feature)
- Hang up after receiving the threatening or harassing call
- Lift the receiver and dial *57 (or 1157 on rotary phones)
- Wait for a recording to tell you whether the call was traced successfully and hang up
- Call Trace service works only on the last incoming call
- Call Trace service works on blocked calls
If you believe you have any information regarding these incidents, please contact any RCMP Detachment, local police or Crime Stoppers anonymously anytime at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or by their Secure Web Tips at www.crimestoppers.ns.ca. Calls to Crime Stoppers are not taped or traced and if police make an arrest and lay charges based on a tip, callers qualify for a cash award from $50 – $2000.
