Halifax fraud cop to host live Twitter chat

On Thursday, March 22, Detective Constable Dana Drover of the HRP/RCMP Integrated Financial Crime Section will host a live Twitter chat between 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. on the topic of fraud as part of Fraud Prevention Month.

“People don’t need to live in fear of becoming a victim of fraud, but there are simple things we can do to protect ourselves,” explains D/Cst. Drover. “The best defence is staying informed – knowing what scams are out there and taking caution.”

D/Cst. Drover has 25 years of policing experience and has been investigating financial crime for more than 10 years. Having received training from the United States Secret Service, Department of Homeland Security in Washington, D.C. as well as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Ottawa, he is a qualified subject matter expert on the topics of counterfeit money, credit card skimming, electronic commerce fraud, bank fraud schemes and identity theft investigations.

While this is the first live Twitter chat hosted by Halifax Regional Police, the department is hoping to cover more crime prevention topics on this platform.

“We realize that the previously tried and true ways of reaching people with our crime prevention messages may not be as effective as they once were,” explains Chief Frank Beazley. “We need to go where the people are, and in today’s world that’s online on social media sites like Twitter.”

To follow the chat, use the hashtag #fraudaware. If you’re not on Twitter, you can go use TweetChat (www.tweetchat.com) to observe the discussion.
